Hackers have stolen personal information of hundreds of thousands of Victorian public school students from a government database. The compromised data includes names, email addresses, school names and year levels, though the Department of Education has not confirmed when the breach occurred. Ross Bark warns that criminals often hold stolen data for years before exploiting it when children become adults, and the attack has been reported to federal government agencies.

There are also concerns that domestic violence victims could be left vulnerable.
